Anyone who has attended a public school in the past few decades will most likely say that it was an awful experience, cluttered with overcrowded classrooms, underfunded extracurricular activities and out of date textbooks. However, Sam Palmer, a twenty-one year old English Literature Major at Frostburg State University, has devoted herself to becoming a teacher even within a seemingly broken educational system. “I just think that education has the power to change the world,” says Sam, who made it clear that she has an absolute passion for education.
Sam is a graduate of Eastern Senior High School in Washington D.C, much like the rest of her family, who are all high school graduates. However, Sam’s aspirations reach higher than a high school diploma; she wants to be the first member of her family to receive a Bachelors degree. Beyond that, Sam has an even loftier plan for the future, starting with her desire to attend Graduate School and become a Literature Professor. Sam has also stated that, setting her slight nervousness regarding air travel aside, she would like to travel the world, specifically to Jamaica, which is where he father is from.
Sam spends her free time at the movies, the mall, and getting pedicures; “I thoroughly enjoy pedicures,” Sam said, but immediately added “please don’t make that the title of this article.” She also enjoys reading, and cited “Kindred,” by Octavia Butler as being her favorite book.
When asked what made her want to pursue a passion in education, and more over, what person influenced her the most, Sam said that her mother was the person she admired above all because she “faced obstacles head on.” Sam said that she admired that, and considered herself to be the same in some ways.
In addition to getting prepared to be future “shaper of young minds,” Sam keeps busy as an active member of the Black Student Alliance and the secretary of a Gospel Choir. Sam is a Baptist Christian and says she “believes in salvation through Christ.” When asked what she thought the title would be if she had an autobiography, Sam replied confidently “Hand Me the Mic.”
