Frostburg Speaks on Interracial Dating

One problem that still exists in America today is the acceptance of interracial relationships. However, more and more people prefer to be in one, as interracial couples appear to be swarming the country more and more each year. This trend shows that people of two different races dating is becoming more acceptable each year. The problem in this is that there are people who still disagree with interracial dating. Nevertheless, after asking people of today’s generation, most students seemed to accept it.

After taking a short stroll through Frostburg’s widely diverse campus, I came across a young man, John Newton, an information technology major from Washington DC. When asking his views on interracial dating, he quoted “I don’t feel any way about it; to me it’s just another relationship.” John made it very clear that he doesn’t feel anyway about interracial dating. Even Sarah Maricle, a business major from Ridgeley, Maryland and her friend Laura Grabosky, a psych major from Conway, South Carolina made it clear that interracial dating does not bother them. Sarah nicely stated that “I really don’t mind it, I am not judgmental towards those things,” and her friend Laura proudly said “Considering that I am in one, I am all for it!”

After it became clear that most students of today’s generation on FSU’s campus do accept the idea of interracial dating and looking at the fact that interracial dating is becoming more popular each year, a big question raised in my head. Would I get the same views if I asked people of an elderly generation? Is that where today’s problem of acceptance towards interracial dating lies?
