Future Movie Producer Gets the Ultimate Chance to “Do Something Big” By: Rita Peacock, English 336.003

The Echo Circle, in Frostburg State University’s central courtyard, fills with passers-by on a breezy summer day on campus. Many students that stroll by make it a point to greet sophomore Shana Knight. In the most friendly and sincere tone she replies, “Hey!” It almost seems strange that she would describe herself as someone, “who likes to be alone” because so many people seem to be endeared to her. However, she clarifies that she does enjoy being with friends. But, make no mistake, you won’t find her in a clique. She exclaims, “I like to do my own thing!”

As a Mass Communication major and an undeclared, but soon to be, Journalism minor, it seems likely that she would have an interest in movies. Shana enjoys horror and action flicks but she notes that she has diverse taste when it comes to movie genres, as long as the film sparks her interest. However, Shana ultimately desires to produce her own movies. She is a native of Frederick, Maryland which she describes as a boring place. When asked where she would prefer to live, she simply said “Anywhere but Frederick!” However, she explains that she would prefer to live in a big city. Her choice of a larger city, that offers more excitement than Frederick, Maryland, seems more conducive to the movie producing business.

Although Shana has big plans for her future, her past was not so clear cut. She explains that she used to hang around the wrong crowd in high school. Therefore, she mentions that “she slacked off” a bit in high school but got herself together in time so that she could attend college. She also mentioned that her dad was not involved in her upbringing. Therefore, she was raised by a single-mom. Her mother was unable to put her brother through college. However, she stated, in the most thankful tone, “My mom found a way to put me through school.”

On coming to college, Shana explains, “I am the first in my family to go to school.” While Shana’s mentioned life’s accomplishments are extremely noteworthy, she knows that she has not lived out her full potential. She states. “I know I want to do something big.” With her warm personality, hard work, and positive character, as well as the education she is receiving at Frostburg State University, she has the necessary fundamentals to accomplish the next big thing.
